Open to Outcome

The Open to Outcome teacher in-service program is designed to help teachers use experiential learning in any classroom.

The approach of being “Open to Outcome” is one in which the learning of either a group or an individual is allowed to organically emerge rather than be prescribed by the facilitator guiding the process. This is achieved by avoiding the use of formulaic or didactic questioning. Instead, facilitators are trained to gently guide participants toward internal reflection by using an open ended questioning model that helps them discover the learning that is true for them, not a predetermined outcome decided for them by the facilitator.

Experiential learning can provide unparalleled opportunities to engage students and teachers in a way that is genuine, authentic, and affect them ‘where they live.’ When people get up and move, whether in games, icebreakers, teambuilding exercises, simulations, initiatives, internships, or just living life, opportunities exist to learn profound lessons. Having a skilled facilitator lead a guided, reflective conversation based on experiential activities increases the opportunity for powerful learning. A facilitator asking the right questions and guiding conversation before, during and after an experience helps open a gateway into thoughts that may not have previously emerged.

As trainers of the nationally recognized Link Crew freshman orientation and transition program we have had many experiences educating high school students and teachers in the use of the learning cycle. In addition to working with the Link Crew program, we also have worked with students and educators in a variety of other settings in which we facilitate and explore the incredible potential of teaching and learning experientially.

The ability to facilitate a meaningful debrief following any type of experience, whether it is watching a film, participating in a structured group activity or reading a book, is an essential tool for any educator.
