A New Year

Doesn’t it seem like each year time goes by a little bit faster?  Well, actually, it’s because it does.  Think, about it: when you are four and a year goes by, you turn five, which in the scheme of things does not seem like much time has passed, but in reality you are suddenly 20% older and amazing things have happened over the space of that year; you have mastered new skills, learned an entire new vocabulary and become experts in entire lines of toys!

What did you accomplish in this last year? When you think of your Link or WEB program, January is a great time to start the reflection process.

How did your events go? How many kids have you supported? Can you feel the difference on your campus that Link Crew and WEB are making? Can others feel it?

A simple thing you could do toward the end of January or early February is to host a year-in-review meeting with your coordinator team and your key leaders or commissioners.

Bring everyone together and put up some paper with a line down the middle. On the left side, put a large plus sign at the top and create a list of everything that went well for your program in 2006. Start with your recruitment of leaders and think through each of the key events. Try to focus on the things that were in your control and you want to be sure to replicate.

On the right side of the paper, put a large triangle at the top of the list. This will be the ‘delta’ list, which is the mathematical symbol for change. Rather than focusing on what went ‘wrong’ consider the positive things that you intend to do this year and focus your list on the things you want to change in your program. Creating a Plus/Delta list can be a great summary meeting for your team. Maybe follow it with a small celebration for all your hard work.

Now is the time to re-evaluate, re-assess and re-group because this is your “down time”. The management of the Link Crew and WEB programs operates with a slightly different rhythm from the rest of the campus; while for everyone else the school year is half over, your new year is just about to begin in a month or two as you prepare to bring on a new team of leaders and start thinking about next year’s class.

Make a commitment to work smarter. Make a commitment to be better.
